ALL CHANGE AT VALE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Headed by new Chairman John Kyte a new look committee was elected at the Vale of Evesham Historical Society at their A.G.M. held at the Almonry Heritage Centre on Thursday 26th April 2012, following the retirement of long-standing Chairman Gerald Heath.
John has a number of ideas for the continued development of the Society, both in supporting the Almonry Museum and the Heritage Centre and creating interest in local history. He said;
“The Almonry Heritage Centre is a cherished asset for this historical town and deserves every support. I will do my best to ensure the Society will do everything possible to maintain its continued success”.
John, who was born and educated in Evesham, was a pupil at Prince Henry’s Grammar School and spent much of his working life with various Government agencies involved with military projects for the RAF and Army (MOD). He was also an active member of the Scout movement including eight year as District Chairman.
Bill Underwood takes over as Vice Chairman having served as Secretary for a number of years. A new Secretary, Rachel Knowles, Treasurer, Life member Stan Brotherton, taking over from former Treasurer Steve Boyes, and new member Eric Bradley complete the changes to the enthusiastic committee.
The retiring Chairman, Gerald Heath was elected a Vice President in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Society and the museum over many years.
The Historical Society welcomes new members, whatever their interests. This can range from simply enjoying the monthly talks on the last Thursday of every month from September to April to joining the activity nights every Thursday evening from 7.30 pm except during August. This provides opportunities to meet to do research, to arrange displays or to maintain exhibits in the museum. A visit to Bosobel House, with its connection with the flight of Charles II following the Battle of Worcester, and the RAF Museum Cosford featuring its new Cold War display will be this year’s historical outing on Tuesday 19th June. Non-members are welcome and details are available at the Almonry.

WORCESTERSHIRE LOCAL HISTORY FORUM
The next Day School is on SATURDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER
at Wilden Church. Welcome and coffee at 9.30 am, starting 10.00 am.
The cost is £10 and church members will provide an excellent cold buffet for lunch for an additional £5.
WORSHIP IN WINDOWS AND THE WILLIS ORGAN
The day will cover stained glass windows, organs and iron making including the Baldwin family, and the Pre-Raphaelites, all in Worcestershire.
The occasion will be to raise funds for the match-funding of the repair of the valuable Victorian Willis organ. This is only a small church but is famous as it is has exceptionally beautiful windows and is the only church in England to have all windows by William Morris. Alfred Baldwin, who owned the nearby iron works and paid for the building of the church, married one of the MacDonald sisters. Another sister, Georgiana married Edward Burne Jones, the PreRaphaelite painter.
Alfred Baldwin was the father of Stanley Baldwin, the three time prime minister, and his grandson, Earl Baldwin, hopes to be present to talk about his family. He also has some interesting artefacts for display.
The WLHF are hoping to have a few 10/15 minute slots in the afternoon for members to tell us about their local organ or stained glass window.If you would like to take part, please let me know. Do help to make the day a success.
Application Forms to attend this event will be available later. Watch this website for details.
